pfsense 1.2.1-RC2 Atheros Wireless Issue addressed

Hello, I recently upgraded one of my routers from pfsense 1.2-RC4 to 1.2.1-RC2 and ran in to a nasty issue regarding my wireless access point seemingly vanishing from existence.

It took a few hours, but I figured out a work-around and posted how to resolve the issue. The jist is in the upgrade from FreeBSD 6.x to 7, somehow the Atheros wireless setting for auto selecting a channel changed such that using auto selection would cause the wireless card to use channel 0 – which is non-sense. My “fix” was to manually select a channel. This was enough for my purposes.

For those who have no idea what I’m talking about – perhaps this would be a good place to get a point of reference.

  1. channel 0 used to be how you set it to auto. That changed in 7.0, and that was changed in pfSense several months ago. I think your card, judging by your forum post, is just suffering from some kind of regression in the driver, where channel selection no longer works with this specific card. The auto channel now works for everyone else who was having problems, and works with the 6 different Atheros cards I have.

  2. Hmm, thanks Chris.. Man, there’s just so much to learn. So if this is the case does the regression in the driver merely require that the driver version distributed needs to just be rolled back, or are these regressions caused by changes elsewhere breaking features in the driver?

    Thanks for the input Chris!
